If you do manage to kill one they leave behind a pool of toxic mess that you need to avoid. But before that happens, they will run or jump towards you and you will need to figure out their pattern in order to avoid them. You are in a confined space and have to deal with a wave of toxic rats which can only be attacked for a limited time after their brain exploded. You may want to give your fingers a rest before taking them on because they pose a real challenge on their own and not always a fair one. As with most platform games you will be facing a boss battle sooner or later. Mad Rat Dead isn’t all about beating levels in time. If you fail to reach the end of the level before the time is up, you will need to try again from the start. Because although you may be able to rewind the action’s you’ve done, the time in which you have left to reach the goal keeps on ticking and is not rewinded in the process. You can do this as many times as you wish, as long as you have time left. Instead you are presented with a heartshaped clock that allows you to turn back time for a couple of frames so that you can recover from your mistake and try again. In the likely event you would die, it is definitely not a game over.

Unfortunately this mechanic is inconsistent and unreliable and becomes rather frustrating after a while. Later on in the game this technique is used to cross wide pits by subsequently attacking enemies in a row by hitting the jump attack on the beat. When you hit the button right on the beat you will attack the enemy. In order to attack enemies you’ll have to perform a jump attack, in which case the enemy is automatically targeted when near.

There’s a nice variation in rhythms and music for each level and the soundtrack of the game is actually quite amazing which is a good thing as you will be focused on the music much more than you would be in a regular platformer game. To help you in hitting the beat at the correct time, the game continuously indicates the rhythm of the game with the matching beats you need to hit in time. Although the combination of these mechanics may come off as rather bizarre it is oddly entertaining once you’re in the zone of the rhythm. As you reach the end of the level, respresented by a golden vertical strip, you get a total score based on your perfect hits, near hits and late ones. Hitting targets on the beat subsequently will award you with combo bonuses. For those who are familiar with Crypt of the Necrodancer, it is basically the same concept applied to a platformer. However, in order to do this you’ll have to perform all of these actions to the rhythm of the beat of the level’s background music, or else you will not progress quickly enough. When I first heard of the concept, I was immediately reminded of Rayman’s Castle Rock level. You are basically controlling a rat in a platformer game and need to reach the end of the level within the given amount of time by jumping obstacles, dashing gaps, attacking enemies and diving down. The description of the gameplay may sound rather simple, but is in fact a combination of different mechanics that are often only seen separately in different games. While the story doesn’t sound like much, it does go a bit deeper than that with a few twists along the way, which for obvious reasons I’m not going to spoil. The rat, mad at what the human had done to him, is determined to spend its extra time to revenge his death and kill the human. As it stands before the Rat God it is given the opportunity to turn back the clock and relive its last twenty-four hours.

The rat in question had to spend its whole life in a cage being poked and prodded for the sake of lab tests and died in the process.

However, as you answer them one by one you observe a scalpel being held by human hands, cutting open the belly of a lab rat with each question that you answer, finalizing the series of questions with the one whether you would like this rat to be saved. Mad Rat Dead starts with a couple of ethical questions that may come across a bit strange without any context. What’s up with the rat, why is it mad and what is the point of it being dead? A lot of my questions were answered during the game’s first minutes. A weird combination to say the least and needless to say I had a few questions to begin with. I started playing this game without any expectations, only with the knowledge that it was a rhythm based game involving a rat. Mad Rat Dead is a peculiar game, developed by Japanese developer Nippon Ichi Software, mostly known from their tactical RPG Disgaea.
